HQ Pony Issue 21 Publication

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

For the 21st issue of the HQ Pony, the following layout was chosen for publication:

HOWDY PARTNER

The style in this layout is what we call vintage.  In scrapbooking terms, vintage means lots of layers and distressing so that the paper and embellishments look old and faded.

I used a variety of patterned papers.  Each one is a different size and individually distressed in such a way to make it look old and ruffled.  This adds to the old cowboy feel I was going for.  The papers were then arranged in layers and once I was happy with their placement, I glued them down.  Lastly I added the photos and then the embellishments.

The main reason for choosing the vintage style on this layout was the pictures, which were taken by my dad at one of the shows.  My sister was playing with her horse Glastnost, putting different hats on his head as my dad snapped away.  The best part was that Glastnost didn't mind at all!!!!

Embellishments were kept to a minimum so as not to detract from the pics.  However, the ones I chose enhanced the vintage theme in a subtle way.

For the cowboy styled title I used sticker alphabets from the same range.  The words "Howdy Partner" and the font all add to the cowboy theme.

HQ Pony Issue 19 Publication

For HQ Pony Issue 19, the following layout was chosen:

Not all who WANDER are LOST

As you can see this is not a “normal” layout in the sense that the picture is not of a horses’s face or body or even a showjumper.  This layout was made around a picture I took of Antarctic’s back legs.  I was standing and patiently waiting for him to look at me, so that I could get a good head shot, and while I was waiting, I saw the opportunity to take the picture of his back legs.  I loved the way he was standing with the one leg flat and the other leg, slightly raised.

I chose to do a very plain and clean line layout, this way the attention is drawn to the picture.  For this same reason I also did not use a lot of embellishments, only the flowers on the left hand side.  The title is also very small, again to not take the attention from the picture.  I tried to stick to the same colours as in the photos, i.e. brown, green and cream.  However, the paper had some teal/turquoise in which blended very well and just gave the layout a bit more colour.

The ABC of our Hush Puppy

Thursday, July 21, 2011

As a scrapbooker, I am sad to report, that this is the very first layout I have done of our hush puppy, Sherlock :-(  Even though I have taken tons of pictures since we got him on the 4th of May and printed half of them.  But needless to say when I saw this sketch on Let's Scrap, my first thought was to use pictures of Sherlock.

The pictures in the layout was some of the first I took of Sherlock when he was only 2 months old - just look at that face, he was SOOOOOO adorably cute :-)  About a month before I did the layout, I bought this Kaisercraft paper - Party Animal.  And the only reason I bought it, was for pictures of Sherlock.  I just loved all the animals that they included in this range!

I'm not very good with titles.  It always takes me a while to get the right title.  So after I had finished most of the layout, I then had to come up with an appropriate title.  In the end I decided on "The ABC of our Hush Puppy".

This will now be the first layout in Sherlock's album :-)

Let's Scrap Fancy Pants Challenge

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Apart from the weekly sketch challenges and the DT challenges on Let's Scrap, there are also monthly challenges.  This month the challenge is to use Fancy Pants products in your layout.  So I decided to use last week's sketch and bring in some FP paper.

Last week's sketch was another amazing sketch by Cheri

The pictures I used are from the SA Scrapbook Convention that was held in April.  We had they great opportunity to have Tim Holtz and Margie Romney Ashlett come to SA for not the first time, but the second time.  And this time round, I made sure I took ENOUGH pictures :-)  As you can see from the layout, I took pictures not only of us with the scrapbooking icons, but also of the goodies that we got in both classes.  These are the small pics at the bottom of the layout.

The background paper, as well as the paper with the clocks on are from Kaisercraft, and the paper strips at the bottom of the layout is of course Fancy Pants.  I picked the clock paper specifically due to the fact that the theme of the convention was "Time to be Creative".  When it came to embellishing, I used everything that we got at the convention, from my name tag, to tickets we got in Margie's class, and I even used the "reserved" sign that we had on our table :-)  That is what I call recycling :-)

After I made the above layout, I was so inspired and feeling very creative, I then made another layout for the Fancy Pants challenge with another awesome sketch by Cheri from Let's Scrap.  For this layout I used pictures that I had taken of one of my sister's horses, Antarctic during a show in April.  I really enjoyed this layout, as I had printed a lot of pictures at one stage, but did not have time to scrap any of them yet.  Once the layout was finished, I felt that something was missing.  I then added the hand stitching on the outside of the layout, to just round it off.

My Let's Scrap Design Team Application

For the Let's Scrap DT application we had to create a layout with the following Let's Scrap (http://letsscrap.ning.com/) sketch designed by Cheri O'Neill.

When I saw the sketch I immediately knew 2 things:
  1. I have to use the pictures that were taken by Marlene Boshoff of myself, and
  2. The pictures would fit perfectly with the new Kaisercraft range, Chapter One.
So in the end, after about two weeks, this is what I came up with.

I tried to not over embellish, due to the fact that my main focus was the pictures and the paper had enough pattern on that could be used as embellishing.  I also did not use a large title, I simply used the word "Live", which was part of the rubons for this range, and then I added the rest of the quote, also from the rub-on, but just alot smaller above the main photo.  I felt that these words are appropriate for the layout!  It reads as follows:
Live.  Love.  Grow.  Enjoy.  Imagine.  Create

Large cappucino with cream, please :-)

Thursday, July 7, 2011

I am a huge coffee fan, but not just any coffee, a cappucino with cream fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  One of the main reasons why I love it soooooo much is that it is like wine.  You can either enjoy it with a girlfriend/s and have a nice chatting session, or you can have one on your own, if you feel like you have to "rejuvenate" yourself.  I find that it is also an uplifter, when your feeling down, there is nothing like a nice cup of coffee!!!!!!!!!!!

Here in South Africa, the best coffee according to me is made by firstly, the Wimpy and secondly, by Seattle Coffee Company.  These pictures are pictures that I took recently at both of these place, as I just love their coffee.  The first one was taken at the Wimpy at OR Thambo International Airport.  We had some coffee at the airport on our way to St Lucia, Natal.  Now there is nothing as nice as having an awesome cup of coffee at 5h30 in the morning when the wind is howling outside and you are waiting for your flight to arrive for the weekend to start :-)  Here in South Africa, the best coffee according to me is made by firstly, the Wimpy and secondly, by Seattle Coffee Company.

This picture below was taken at the Seattle Coffee Company in Sandton City, another awesome place that I do not get to much, so when I do get there I feel like a tourist in my own city :-)  I had this cuppa while I was reading one of the books I am currently busy with (Spartan Gold, A Fargo Adventure by Clive Cussler with Grant Blackwood (a bit more about it once I have finished it)) and waiting for our RT ladies evening to begin.  That night it was also freezing, and I just had this urge to go sit somewhere have a nice cuppa while reading a few pages.  So of course, Seattle was the best place to go, so European or is it now American :-)

And of course I cannot go without a some interesting facts about coffee that I found on the internet.

Coffee is a brewed beverage prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant, colloquially called coffee beans.  The beans are found in coffee cherries, which grow on trees cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in equatorial Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.  Green (unroasted) coffee is one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world.  Coffee can have a stimulating effect on humans due to its caffeine content.  It is one of the most-consumed beverages in the world.

Coffee has played a crucial role in many societies.  The energizing effect of the coffee bean plant is thought to have been discovered in the northeast region of Ethiopia, and the cultivation of coffee first expanded in the Arab world.  The earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking appears in the middle of the 15th century, in the Sufi monasteries of Yemen in southern Arabia.  From the Muslim world, coffee spread to Italy, then to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia, and to the Americas.  In East Africa and Yemen, it was used in religious ceremonies.  As a result, the Ethiopian Church banned its secular consumption, a ban in effect until the reign of Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia.  It was banned in Ottoman Turkey during the 17th century for political reasons, and was associated with rebellious political activities in Europe.

Coffee berries, which contain the coffee seeds or "beans", are produced by several species of small evergreen bush of the genus Coffea.  The two most commonly grown are the highly regarded Coffea arabica, and the 'robusta' form of the hardier Coffea canephora.  The latter is resistant to the devastating coffee leaf rust (''Hemileia vastatrix'').  Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried.  The seeds are then roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor.  They are then ground and brewed to create coffee.  Coffee can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways.

An important export commodity, coffee was the top agricultural export for twelve countries in 2004, and it was the world's seventh-largest legal agricultural export by value in 2005.  Some controversy is associated with coffee cultivation and its impact on the environment.  Many studies have examined the relationship between coffee consumption and certain health conditions; whether the overall effects of coffee are ultimately positive or negative has been widely disputed.  The method of brewing coffee has been found to be important to its health effects.

I hope you enjoyed it, and go make yourself a nice cuppa and enjoy it whether its with a friend or even just by yourself!!!!!!!!!!!  I am going to leave you with the slogan from Nescafe:
"EVERYTIME YOU ENJOY A CUP YOUR SENSES COME ALIVE WITH THE SMOOTH, RICH TASTE AND AROMA SO UNIQUELY"

Something to make you smile :-)

A friend is someone who fills our lives with beauty, joy and grace.

And makes the world we live in a better and happier place.

There is a mirable called friendship, that dwells in the heart.  You do not know how it happens or when it gets its start.

But you know the special lift it always brings.  You realise that friendship is the world's most precious gift.

Why GOD made pets!!!!!!!!!!

They help out around the house.....

They protect our children.

They look out for the smaller ones...

They show us how to relax....

They "converse"with each other.

They help you when you're down...

They are great at decorating for the holidays...

They have great expectations.

They are Patriotic.

They are happy to "test" the water.

They love their "teddies".

They know who's BOSS.

and they know when we need a good laugh!

Have you smiled today?????
It is done by moving the corners of hte mouth upward.  Let me show you how..............
